Drinking coffee before exercising has some surprising benefits. Many fitness buffs may scoff at those they see finishing a cup of coffee on their way into the gym but little do they know these last minute coffee drinkers are onto something. We all know caffeine is a stimulant to help start your morning with but this stimulant is also beneficial with performance in the gym.
Caffeine releases neurotransmitters such as dopamine while exercising that helps you not only perform better but feel better while doing it. Coffee is an excellent pre-workout stimulant that will not only improve the quality of your workout but has many health benefits that you can read about in my prior blog.
You don't need to drink a lot of caffeine to receive these benefits either, about 250mg is all you need in a day to get the desired boost for you workout. 250mg of caffeine is in a 12oz cup of coffee (depending on the strength of the coffee) which is about how much most people drink in the morning. Having this pre-workout cup of coffee is best about an hour before your workout to receive the best effect. Drinking water after your cup of coffee and obviously during your workout is a good idea as well in order to keep yourself hydrated.
